Reflection

Learned about effectively managing time, documenting all variations of small changes so I could look back to compare and contrast. I learned new tools in indesign such as changing the tint in text colour, making sure theres a bleed and including grids and columns to layout each page successfully.

I learned that to fit certain briefs you have to be flexible and open to styles you’re not used to, I have never used this style before and it was quite rewarding to see it all come together at the end.

I have learned that the design process is crucial in regards to the end result. In the past I have just done my designs without analysing all of my drafts which has really disadvantaged me. I do, though, believe I spend maybe too much time analysing my process as a form of procrastination which is not good.

Rationale

As I’m well aware of the need for the speed for a feed, I decided to create a guide for kai on the go. As I would imagine, someone wanting a quick feed in wellington would be time limited, I therefore used a minimalist approach to effectively settle the minds of the those hungry and rushing. Furthermore I wanted to make it clear that I was catering for all meal courses. To do this I have used appropriate colour for the early morning, mid-day and evening. Additionally I have used a shadow on the headings of my text to accentuate the position of the sun.

I improved my lack of saving of drafts by screenshotting every version of my compositions and printing straight away to see what it looked like in physical form, which really helped with decision making, which will be helpful in the future.

Sem1 Week 6

This week I had feed back from Jason and Donald, both of which pointed out niggly things I had to fix up which included things like moving around my icon, adding tangible information as the page was more informative of the place rather than direct information about the place. I ‘perfected’ the text on my back page and touched up all the rags and tints of the body and subheading text on each sub category.

I chose to print on a textured paper to accentuate the effect of the grain on my illustrations, the outcome was what I was wanting which is great.

Ultimately was just fixing up any small changes that needed to be made, there are 1 or 2 things that I wish I had fixed if I had a bit more time but I feel as though all designs are unfinished or imperfect and in need of improvement always.

More map inspo

I’ve researched a wider range of maps that are more minimalist so I have a little more direction in terms of something that will work with my overall brochure. Some fit more than others such as the blue blocky map which is shown below. It will be a challenge to find how I can use this in my own work but I’ll have a go.

Map Inspiration

I have been in search of some inspiration for abstract ways to design my map and have come across an artist called Lu Xinjian who illustrates arial views on google maps of cities around the world using extremely detailed line work and shapes with various colour palettes. I’m not sure if I’ll be using this work as inspiration for my final design as it’s quite detailed for my minimalist style but I will be experimenting as I find it extremely pleasing to the eye. I love how the detailed shapes and lines create a pattern and isn’t instantly identifiable a a map, I find that’s a very interesting aspect of peoples designs, how some things aren’t instantly seen as what they are intended to be.

Sem 1 week 5

This week I have been illustrating other elements to include in my spreads to add a third aspect and give a little more information for the viewer in terms of what they might expect from these shops. I have illustrated fish and chips, a bowl of oats and a souvlaki. I also illustrated a fish burger that I’ll cover the front and back pages and when opened completely will show the burger whole. I chose a burger for this because that was my favourite thing on the chippery menu.

Sem 1 week 4

This week I have found direction on what style I’d like to carry throughout my brochure, I started off with a pen and wash style and thought I would 100% stick with that but then tried the minimalist style inspired by an image one of my peers showed me which looked quite unified and strong as a design style so stuck with that. I began to see a bit of printmaking reminisce within the design style which I found interesting and decided to explore that a bit more with my illustrations so added some noise as a ‘printmaking’ texture.
